This means against dangerous foes you can “tank” via your pet. What makes this special is that its fairly simple to make this pet take way less damage from attacks while giving it high health regen and the ability to provoke the mobs attention while the pet is immune to critically bad things like charm. Put a flashbulb on? Use fire and your pet will use provoke! Have some light affiliated attachments that give regen+? Use light manoeuvre once and youll get some regen, stack 3 light manoeuvres and youll get super health regen! Your elemental manoeuvres enhance the attachments which correspond to the element of the manoeuvre. One of the most common combos is to use both the valoredge head and body the “tanky” pieces. What body you pick can set things like, what weaponskills it will use, while its head determines its tactics. The really cool thing about pup is you can mix different head and body types, as well as the various attachments. Others have posted all the good guides for pup already, i thought id just briefly talk about what some people use pup for in todays 99 era. That all said, I hope you enjoy PUP - it's so fucking cool. The rest of the costs are normal for every job: building different sets for different scenarios and the costs of upgrading/reforging/augmenting gear.
PUPPETMASTER BEST AUTOMATON BUILD UPGRADE
The other main money sink that other jobs don't necessarily have is the cost of the level 50 artifact armor set, which you will want so that you can upgrade it to iLVL versions likely, as it is 'crafted' by an NPC that you bring materials to and also the cost of the last two automaton upgrades: Spiritreaver (BLM) and Soulsoother (WHM) heads that are similar NPC 'crafting' quests. It certainly won't be optimal, but you should be able to, without crazily breaking the bank, come up with decent automaton sets for most things you'd want it to do. You can't use all attachments at once, and many will go unused for a long time until you start having specific automaton setups or even until you get the Job Point ("exp" after you cap at 99) gifts that enhance your automaton equipping capabilities. Speaking from experience of (re)starting PUP recently on a new character, there is a medium buy-in, I'd say, but part of that is if you are very completionist with getting all the attachments for your automaton.

Puppetmaster is the best class/job I've encountered in any videogame, FF or otherwise. If you are having trouble getting some specific questions answered you could also PM me, if you want. Other than that, if you are currently on Shiva I might be able to help you out a bit with getting started, but if not you'll want to make use of the above PUP thread and the upcoming advice chat channel. Note that some of the fights in the video may contain story boss spoilers, so you may want to hold off on watching the videos if you are still working on the storylines. But that'll hopefully change in the future. I also have a Youtube channel showing off the unique way in which an endgame PUP can solo certain content, though I haven't made any new videos lately due to playtime constraints. If you have any questions, that's usually the best place to ask-though I suggest reading back some of the thread as a lot of the same questions get frequently asked and might already have been answered for you, though they typically relate to endgame in some ways. I'm one of the contributors to the String Theory PUP guide on BGwiki and FFXIAH, and most of the active discussion surrounding the job takes places in this thread on FFXIAH. That said, tinkering with your Automaton is the most fun part of the job and the best way to improve your understanding. It's actually quite easy to get into and performs well even if you aren't sure about all of the mechanics. Hey, glad to see you've found an interest in PUP! In my opinion, it's the most mechanically interesting and complex job in the entire game, but that doesn't mean it's impossibly difficult to play. Check out the new 1-119 guide on BG Wiki.
